Do you own a Logitech G29, G920 or G923? You have two choices: improve the setup you already know or move to Direct Drive. Here is how to decide.
How your Logitech works compared with modern wheelbases
The G29, G920 and G923 use two motors and helical gears to transfer force to the wheel. Logitech currently rates these systems at 2.3 Nm.
This mechanism is reliable, but the gears add friction and mechanical play between the motors and your hands. The result can be:
- a slightly notchy feeling when turning;
- more noise during sudden force-feedback effects;
- less detail around the centre;
- slower and softer changes in force;
- less maximum torque than modern entry-level Direct Drive bases.
What does Direct Drive change?
A Direct Drive wheel mounts the steering shaft directly to a servo motor. There are no gears or belts between the motor and the rim.
With fewer mechanical parts filtering the signal, the wheel can react faster and communicate smaller details more clearly. You usually get smoother rotation, less noise, stronger torque and a better sense of tyre grip.
That does not make your Logitech obsolete. The G29 family remains a popular and proven entry point, with wide game support and years of community knowledge behind it.
Why keeping the Logitech still makes sense

If the force feedback still feels strong enough, a carefully chosen mod can give the setup a new purpose for much less than replacing everything.
What should you budget for Direct Drive?
Starter bundles include the main components. Outside those bundles, always check whether the wheelbase, steering wheel, pedals, table clamp and quick release are included or sold separately.

What about the pedals?
The R3 includes a two-pedal SR-P Lite set, while the R5 Pro includes the newer two-pedal SR-P Lite 2 set. The clutch is optional, and the basic brake is not load-cell based.
The Logitech set gives you three pedals immediately. Its brake is also not a load cell, but its resistance and complete layout may still suit you better. Do not replace it only because the new wheelbase says Direct Drive.

Short answer: modifying your Logitech is still worthwhile when you want a new driving position at a controlled cost. If force-feedback quality is the main thing you want to improve, save the mod budget and put it toward Direct Drive.
